The Icon Bar: News and features: ArgoNet's mail server downed

ArgoNet's mail server downed

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 10:33, 3/4/2001 | ,

ArgoNet's mail server, Golden, is currently flooded by nearly a quarter of a million extra messages, and as a consequence people are finding it difficult to send and receive mail. As an email outage makes it hard to inform customers, we're helping out by repeating the news here.

Messages to ArgoNet subscribers (including many with their own domain names) are being queued for later delivery, so you may not get a reply for a day or two, but messages should arrive eventually; outgoing messages have been a problem, but a new server has been brought online ahead of schedule to take the load.

Any ArgoNet customers out there should make sure that their outgoing mail is going via smtp.argonet.co.uk, which is now hosted on a new machine on a different network. This should already be the case for Voyager users.

More info should be available from the support website and the argonet.announce newsgroup.

Here endeth the public service announcement.

Unregistered user More info from the support website? Where? The 'latest news' bulletin is still the Winter 1999 one!

Unregistered user Er... not from where I'm sitting. Apart from having the latest posting there's also the Posty dev stuff, new newsgroup, engaged tones, fresco ssl, cgi server...

Make sure you're going to http://www.argonet.co.uk/Bulletin.html (linked to from the front page), and you haven't got a dodgy copy in your cache.

Unregistered user Since when as the Iconbar been a sounding ground for Argonet? Is it a condition of the cheap hosting, or something? ;-)

Unregistered user I'd say a significant percentage of RISC OS users are Argonutters, and to quote from the news item:
"As an email outage makes it hard to inform customers, we're helping out by repeating the news here."

Unregistered user So you got a new page up between 14.49 and 16.02 did you, Richard? ;-)

I had just fetched the page when I posted the comment, and don't use a cache when browsing. I know what I saw ...

Unregistered user OK ... the new page was there when I last commented, but now the Winter '99 one's back.

You guys sure have big trouble at Argo Towers ...

Unregistered user David, I haven't been on the ArgoNet payroll for at least two years, and don't have anything to do with putting up bulletins on their site. I might be hanging around doing freelance programming work ATM, but that doesn't mean I'm involved in the day-to-day support.

The bulletin was on their site before I made the posting on TIB, because the ISP wanted to try to inform their customers themselves before hearing it second hand. I don't know what's wrong with your browser, but I've not been able to replicate your problem.

And Rob, there's more to news than announcing cool hardware - which in itself could be seen as merely giving publicity to whatever company's producing it.

Unregistered user Aha! I think it's a DNS propagation thing. Presumably the web server was changed yesterday and the new page is only on the new server. I usually browse connecting through an unmetered Freeserve account, which was giving the old page. Connecting via Argo gave the new one. I guess the change hadn't got to the Freeserve DNS servers.
Sorry, Richard.

Unregistered user To be honest, I've not seen an Argonet user in my http access logs, The Oaktree House Talker, #acorn and even #argonet in *ages*. Just how many subscribers do they have these days? Used to be loads of Agronet users in these places; no more.

Unregistered user Maybe it's the lack of unmetered access for the monthly fee?
