First MyTunes alpha released [Updated^2]

Posted by Andrew Poole on 23:05, 10/3/2005 | ,

MyTunes Alpha in actionHot on the heels of the announcement on Sunday, Andrew Flegg has released the first alpha version (0.01 to be precise) of his !MyTunes application for you all to play with.

So far, you can add tracks to the library and it will very happily play them, displaying the details of the currently playing track, and will let you pick another song from the library to play.

All this has been squeezed into 399 lines of code and has been written using the WimpWorks development tool and should work on IYONIX machines with no problems. Andrew urges anyone who experiences any major problems or has any suggestions to get in touch with him.

[Update]: Andrew has uploaded an updated version of MyTunes, taking it up to version 0.02, to the website. Go and download it now. Go on. Are you still here? Off you go :)

[Update^2]: And in keeping with the updates, version 0.05 is now available. Have fun!

I currently see no advantage that is has over the RISC OS filer, and !AMPlayer, but I expect once it is finished it will be a fully feratured as the real iTunes, which is a great application.
I look forward to future releases. :)

I should perhaps point out that the brushed metal window background isn't part of MyTunes, it's what I had set as the window tile on my RiscPC and never got round to taking it off again :)

Personally, I just didn't get on with AMPlayer; I found it difficult to handle playlists and large libraries of music, amongst other things. The fact that new frontends are positively encouraged and the simple API made it a fairly easy decision.

I must point out that Andy's screenshot features a brushed metal background - that's not included in MyTunes; blame his theme :-)

So in the scale of tune goodness it goes:

Queen > Quantum Leap > Abba > Disney? ;-)

Stop deluding yourself - Abba beats Quantum Leap, dude. Just barely, but there you go.

Can't anyone take screenshots with Portishead on them? No-one can deny the awesome power that is Portishead!

Surely Disney -> Queen -> Abba -> Quantum Leap would be about right... :o)

Cue people telling me I'm wrong ;o)

You're wrong. How can any soundtrack featuring Kool and the Gang feature so low? :-p

Updated screenshot of v0.02 here. I'd hoped to get it out tonight, but needs a couple of things resolving first.

v0.02's been uploaded to the same URL as before. Unfortunately, any exist library will need to be regenerated, but you can now use any ID3 tags to build up the list.

Some of the changes include: new "previous" button and volume control; saving of window size/preferences; lower memory footprint; more reliable loading of large libraries (ie. >~2000 tracks); basic sorting; ID3 tag parsing for the track list (as mentioned above), and probably some other stuff I've forgotten as well.

Many thanks to the >100 people who've downloaded it and provided feedback in the first 24 hours alone!

v0.02? Feh - that's so passé [wonder if that accent'll come out] - v0.05's now available to download with numerous bug fixes - including the tracklist text now being fully constrained to the separate columns; and new features like window size/position, volume and currently playing track being saved between sessions.
