Next computer, probably a beagleboard---once RO5 has been ported over. No pressure or anything ...
Will be a curious state of affairs if Jeffrey Lee is responsible, by bringing it to modern hardware, for saving Riscos from a future as little more than an emulated curiosity. I wonder if ROLtd and Castle would acknowedge him? |

I suspect an ARM11 is a better choice to port RISC OS too: the A8 is just too different. But there are no cool netbooks based around the ARM11.Then somebody would have to make hardware aswell. I'll know I'llbe buying one of these CortexA8 netbooks once Jeffrey & CO finishes this port |

Well... not yet...
Search for Mio MID (arm 11 based netbook) not out yet but hopefully.
Also see here (tablet/netbook dual purpose device). It is based on a beagle board so the current porting work also based on beagle board should make this option no1. for a risc OS portable. http://i.gizmodo.com/5162584/first-hands-on-touch-book-is-part+netbook-part+tablet
If the work over on risc os open is sucessfull then we have a risc os netbook |

Some concrete news about the Snapdragon netbooks - http://www.liliputing.com/2009/05/qualcomm-coins-the-term-smartbooks-for-netbooksmartphone-mashup.html
No hard specs or details for the models that will be available, but apparently they'll be here in the autumn. |

Well, there's still the Touch Book...
My guess, though, is that the Freescale i.MX515 and the Snapdragon will be the more successful netbook chips, they're actually meant for netbooks, whereas the OMAP3530 is essentially a cell phone chip (the OMAP3430) in a larger package so it's easier to design a board for it. |

Yeah, it's not that much of a big deal.
The fact is that when I started it was clear that OMAP3 chips were going to get used for at least something, and all the hardware docs (bar the SGX) were readily available, along with a dev board. Meanwhile with Freescale's/Qualcomm's chips I don't think there was a suitably public developer program available at the time, nor any dev boards available (not that I actually tried looking for any!), or even a single product that had been announced that was using the chips. Even now there isn't much information in the way of concrete hardware specs for the Snapdragon netbooks - even simple things like whether they're single or dual core (which would obviously be mostly useless for RISC OS in its current form).
The only problem is that I know that sooner or later people will start to want RISC OS to run on other hardware (especially if the Touch Book is a flop and no other OMAP3 netbooks appear), and I'll probably be the one they'll come to first! |

*mumbles something about making the wrong choice when he started porting to OMAP* Looks like there will be a lot more companies releasing ARM based netbooks in the near future, Inventec has four models in the pipes and as they are a company that develops and produces "no-name" computers it's likely that almost anyone will be able to buy from them and brand any way they'd want to:

At this point, it looks like there's two Snapdragon chips, one a 1 GHz single core, one a 1.5 GHz dual core. And, it looks like there'll be a 1.3 GHz single core in Q4 of this year...
http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/01/qualcomms-1-3ghz-qsd8650a-snapdragon-chipset-is-30-stronger/
And, for Freescale, there is now Genesi's developer program, at least.

More OMAP3 stuff!
http://www.liliputing.com/2009/06/ecs-launches-t800-an-81-inch-android-powered-mini-laptop-video.html
There are also various devices being announced using Tegra, but that's based around an ARM11 core and so probably a bit less interesting than Cortex. |

Ah, I forgot about those two chips. That solves the performance gap, that just leaves the peripheral issue. |

Ah, I forgot about those two chips. That solves the performance gap, that just leaves the peripheral issue. The OMAP3 does actually support CE-ATA, which I guess is how they're connecting the hard disc/SSD in the T800. Apparently the T800 also has (mini) PCIe, although I can't see any mention of it in the (preliminary) OMAP34x TRM. So I guess there's some scope for building an OMAP34x into a nettop type device, especially if you can use a PCIe graphics card and avoid the poor pixel rate of the onboard video.
Also, first actual i.MX515 netbook? http://www.liliputing.com/2009/06/wistron-n900z-good-battery-life-meh-performance.html |

Is it just me, or is CE-ATA just an MMC-connected hard drive interface?
Anyway, I'm wondering if they've got something really screwy going on like a USB to PCIe bridge or something. |

Is it just me, or is CE-ATA just an MMC-connected hard drive interface? It uses the MMC controller, but presumably it will be a bit faster than your standard MMC card! |

I'm very tempted by the 27" LED Cinema Display. But then I wonder if, rather than shelling out £899 (!) for just a monitor, whether I should go all the way and get the bloody iMac. |

http://www.macrumors.com/2012/05/14/apple-to-release-thinner-macbook-pro-at-wwdc/ Meh. I wouldn't bother, but that's me. Mac OS X Lion (and Mountain Lion, from a quick play with the developer preview) is awful.
My MacBook Pro still runs Snow Leopard, and will be staying that way.
Anyway, my latest hardware purchase arrived today |

If the rumors of 2880x1800 are true, and it's IPS... I'll have to open my wallet.
Probably stick Windows on it using Boot Camp, I just want the screen. |

It's actually a HDMI->DVI lead, since my TV is apparently too old to have a HDMI socket, but instead has DVI in

Mac OS X Lion (and Mountain Lion, from a quick play with the developer preview) is awful. I like Lion! Mail, Calendar, full screen apps are things I couldn't be without now. (Faffy saving and reloading tabs in Safari not so great though). Looking forward to Twitter integration, notifications and AirPlay mirroring in Mountain Lion.
Would love the retina display and more processing power for doing photo editing.
