I've just ported four demos to StrongARM-based RiscPCs. All of them are available here on the Productions page: http://www.kameli.net/fit/

Tested under rpcemu and Risc PC 700. Some more might be coming up when I find the time and motivation. 2-3 other productions might be doable, let's see smile

Can you smell the irony of that statement on a RISC OS forum?

There's something approaching a screenshot if you click on the small square preview icon of each file, but it's not much.

I can confirm all four of them work on an Iyonix, but Stercus and Hex Pistols disagree with the monitor definitions (the screen comes out twice as wide as it should do, resulting in two copies of the picture featuring alternate lines) - this may or may not be fixed with Aemulor Pro.

Also, Hex Pistols plays twice as slowly as it should do, including the music - which is quite an interesting experience!

Thank you for testing smile I have no Lyonix around (maybe closer than 1000 kilometers...) so it's a bit difficult to test. IIRC Stercus and Hex Pistols run in 32-bit color and the rest in 8-bit, which might explain some of the behavior. Hexp uses the same mod player as the rest so the slowdown can't be explained easily. I too had to tweak my monitor prefs to get decent 320x256 out. Sorry about that, but 640x480 was just too slow and 320x256 seems to be the only common lowres mode with a correct aspect ratio - most of the prods were originally made for AGA Amigas.

Sounds like it's de-interlaced itself. Try adjusting your monitor.

A9home (Os 4.42) runs them too, unaltered, in auto monitor config.

One port more: Megademo IV 2 by Artwork
Available here: http://ftp.kameli.net/pub/fit/ports/mdiv2_riscos.zip

Requires some 20M memory and 320x256x15b mode

Whilst all the ported demos mentioned sofar on this list work fine on my A9home (thanks Markku for porting them), I can't help wondering what a new native demo would look like.

I don't think there has been any native demo released on RISC OS to work exclusively on the A9home and Iyonix. Is there anyone out there who is up to the challenge of creating a new native RISC OS demo? Something to keep us ticking over for the next few years.

I think part of the problem with the demo scene (or lack of) is that it takes a lot of time and skill to create a demo that will impress the viewer. This is especially true now that most people are used to seeing whizz-bang 3D accelerated graphics on other platforms. Creating a demo for a Cortex-A8 could be interesting because there'll be so much extra power available to play with, but creating one for an Iyonix/A9home may just be an exercise in masochism due to the lack of floating point and the inferior caches/memory buses (particularly the slow speed of writing to PCI RAM on the Iyonix) The Cortex-A8 isn't perfect either (I hear there are some nasty pipeline stalls you've got to watch out for with the VFP/NEON instructions), but it will be a much better starting point if you want to create something that has the chance of impressing someone.

That said, demos for retro machines manage to be mindblowing, especially when given the constraints of the system. There are people doing ridiculously impressive things with half the power of a BBC, let alone an Iyonix.

Led Blur by Mindlapse is the latest port. Let's see what more is to come smile 320x256x32b, StrongARM etc. required. Tested under RPCEmu, RPC+3.70 and RPC+4.39. Download here: http://ftp.kameli.net/pub/fit/ports/ledblur_riscos.zip

Another little port. Actually it was already ported, but completely unusable on a real Risc PC. Planet Hively (a music disk) by IRIS and Up Rough:

Any chance of porting a demo that is a little bit more challenging in terms of processor requirements, perhaps something that would be more suited on the A9home or Iyonix rather than the Risc PC?

Lessee smile Some of the ports are so slow that they might actually run well only on A9home or Iyonix. But while we're at it here's one more:
http://ftp.kameli.net/pub/fit/miracle/miracle_riscos.zip

A bit sluggish on SA Risc PC. Sorry about that, but this production was originally made for a lot faster computer.

This runs fine on the A9home. Any chance you do an "unwatered down" version. Be good to see how that runs.

Here you go: http://www.kameli.net/~marq/miraslow.zip

Compiled straight from the original Linux source. Painfully slow on my SA Risc PC at least smile There's quite a lot of fp code in there.

The A9home copes with this quite well.
One or two millisecond pauses as it plays thru, and the orange boulders bounce a little slower. Neither of these distracted from watching the demo tho.

The whole demo to me seamed a little crisper than the watered down version.

Yeah, lack of FPE always was a bugger in Acorn boxen, A7000 and below. I always wished I could have gotten my hands on an A7000+ at some point, for the ARM7500FE. Still, I suppose at this point it's all rather academic, in any sense of the term big smile

Perfectly watchable on an Iyonix - and a definite improvement at that. Thank you!

Also, a slight oddity isn't present in this version - while both of them suffer from needing a far smaller screen mode than the computer can provide, resulting in two tiny screens side by side in the middle, in the first version the white background flash effect in the middle overran to fill up the blank parts of the screen as well as the bits the demo was actually occupying, whereas the new one just flashed the relevant parts.

I realise this is rather academic, as it's not supposed to be letterboxed and duplicated in the first place. wink

Not sure you can class Weston-Super-Mud as Brisol smile

Well, hopefully there will be another one. Weirdly enough someone mentioned the Sundown convention to me at the 2010 London ROS show.
Really like the whole Demo scene thing. The retro stuff is what I like about programming when you actually have to think about how efficient your code is. Alas I think it'll be a lost art in the future, before you know it, you'll have an army of kiddies scripting hugely metary nonsense which requires equivelent to the supercomputers today to just about run :/

Well I dunno about that, some of the stuff the guys do in the demo scene is pretty spectacular, proper maffs.

I think they should at least start with basics of programming in schools, actually teaching kids about 2D graphics and simple 3D graphics programming without a preset API/library to at least give them an idea of how it works internally. C++ in a nice readable format would also be something worth explaining to kids at least as I don't see C++ being one of these fad languages anytime soon. If they've got a grasp of the basics in this then they at least stand a chance of transferring that knowledge to and quickly picking up other languages and systems.

Because most schools have PCs; give them a template program which sets them up with access to all the memory and the video framebuffer, explain what they need to avoid in memory and what they can use. It'll not only teach them about handling memory with video directly which is pretty universal across technology, but it'll also teach them how to not be tied into GUIs/OSes and other stuff large corps. try to snare programmers in to.
