Come to think of it, I think I used to have the hi-res version before my old hard drive went down :o

Oh, and make sure you put the patch in a seperate zip as well, for people who already have the game :P
I'm a bit wary of doing that, mainly because there are the different versions knocking around, and especially since the version number on the info window hasn't changed to reflect that :|

Plus looking at the file dates in the kosovo version, it looks like almost all the level data is compressed, which nobrainer doesn't support.

What I was thinking of was uncompressing the kosovo version, applying the updated patch to it, and then releasing that as 'the' version of asylum. Also if we are planning on making a 32bit version, adding mod support, etc. then it'd be easiest to have the one copy rather than trying to support everyone. This would probably involve dropping RO 2/1MB RAM/floppy support at some point, but those people should really upgrade to a nice Iyonix!

*enters convulsions at the thought of a great idea*

Multplayer Asylum deathmatches :o

I'll try and find some docs on the compression system AS has used, and if it looks simple enough I'll integrate it into nobrainer, so we can still keep the compressed data if we want.

I'd like a hi-res version I could play tonight :E
There's virtually no difference! All mode 49 is is mode 13 but with twice as many rows, to stop some monitors displaying the game in letterbox mode. All Asylum does is draw to every other row, then copy that data into the row below. Unless he's done some high res graphics or increased the area of the level you can see :o

I'll bring in a copy of Oddball to stick on the site, as well as whatever asylum/patch version I go with.

Sounds like the best solution, to me.

Oh, I know there isn't graphically; but it would look a lot better on my 21" monitor 8) It's all nasty and letterboxed at the mo, cos I haven't got the <insert name of software that stops this here>. :P

Sounds great :)

Erm, I think it would be a good idea to have an archive of the two older versions of Asylum on the site too; in a less prominent place, obviously ;) Only for completion.

On my 17" one the pixels are a bit slanty on low res modes, but that's about it :P

I think the way to stop letterbox modes is to fiddle with the MDF. But I've got no idea what the values do, and never tracked down the MDF editor that's available somewhere :|

OK - I should be able to supply the original '94 copy, any copies I can find on Arc World/AU CDs (At least one, IIRC), as well as the original version of Oddball and the Arc World floppy cover disc one should it be any different. And any CD versions if I come across those :o

I'll definitely provide a patch for one or more versions, as well as a simple compress/decompress program for the compressed files (Unless one is in gamesuite already). I'm not sure whether I'll have the time to incorporate this into nobrainer :o

I *think* the compressed version of Asylum can cope with both compressed and uncompressed code/data files - certainly it allows the game code to be uncompressed.

/me leaves it in :flamethrower:'s capable hands :) Have you got ftp access to http://asylum.acornarcade.com/?

I've got the two demos of both Asylum and Oddball to put on there; the demo of Asylum isn't hi-res - don't know whether a hi-res version of the demo was produced or not.

I doubt it - by the time high res Asylum came out, the game was freeware anyway.

I just tried Oddball (it was also on the Kosovo CD) and I remember spending hours playing that game! It was great - but it does seem much easier now. I was expecting it to be a different game ... I was thinking of Revolver. That was a class game. It was a bit like the special stages in Sonic 1.

Ah; Revolver! Yes, I can see why you would get the two confused. I played the demo; never got the full version; but it was good.

Do you remember the platformer the same company did? Big Bang - it was great; again, I only had the demo, though.

Yeah I had both the demos too. :) Big Bang was really weird - collecting teddy bear heads and the detachable head of the main character. I remember collecing a rabbit in the demo and it started to rain teddy bear heads... The special effects like the watery effect and the mirroring added to the weirdness.

Maybe the author would release the full games as freeware now. :o

I was thinking the same :) Wonder whether it'd work on a StrongARM. Hmmm.

Might be something to think about once the Asylum site is up and running.

I've got a copy of Big Bang :)

Got a bit annoying without a save game feature though, not even one to let you restart a level you've already completed. *thinks a bit* Actually, there may have been a password system, for every three levels or so. I can't remember though. Nice and psychadelic though :)

I only had the demo of Revolver though :(

Yeah but the colour scheme is much nice here. :E It is really hard to read the small blue text at AcornArcade on old moniters. Actually I think the AcornArcade forums should be moved to here under the title "AA Sections". Curently the TIB forums are under a heading "TIB Sections".

Just my 2p. :)
