I've done an update to egnufeB, most interesting of which to you lot is probably a test release of my TPF 3D engine (See bottom of page).

I'm aiming to get at least a few other things done during the holidays, including but not limited to:
  • Some updates to TPF
  • Finishing & releasing my magical sprite plotter/fixed point math/kitchen sink code generator thingy
  • Finish & release my WIMP befunge interpreter
  • Finish the VDU driver for NetHack, and make a new & 32bit release
  • Finish the C conversion of Asylum
  • Something else I can't remember ATM
  • Upload my Inform stuff to egnufeB, and perhaps do some new Inform stuff
If you're wondering why I haven't been around so much, it's because I'm only coming on the 'net about once a week. So there :P :o

All sounds great. I'll have a look at TPF...

Any chance of a 32-bit version of Surgeon? It's just a recompile ;)

  • My 32bit WIMP Funge-98 interpreter (Try it, you know you want to!)
  • Erm, nothing else :(
Next on my list is NetHack, or if I actually obey the order my magical sprite thingy. Or more probably, some failed attempt at an I-F game :|

Bah! The IF archive seems surprisingly empty. And I'm sure there's something else I'm meant to be doing online today :frown:

Hmm, I'm in need of a good cyberpunk plot for my IF game, but can't think of one. Any ideas? :o

Well, it's a post-apocalyptic world where technology is king... <fx: scrabbles to remember the whole cyberpunk cliché ;)>

What kind of plot elements, tricks, weapons etc. are you looking to include? Do you have any characters yet? Any ideas on a setting? If you have no plot at all, it might be best to try and build one up piecemeal rather than sit there with a completely blank piece of paper... erm, completely blank text editor document... or whatever it is you whacky kids use these days. Anyway, pick some cool stuff you want to include (or bad stuff you want to avoid), and work the plot around that.

In a world where technology was king. In a land where machines rule all. In a time of great peril, one man, had a mission. When your life is no longer your own, when everything you know is wrong. In an outpost, on the edge of space, a robot renegade cop fights for the humans.

Woo^2!
  • New version of Befunge, with a slew of bug fixes (doh!)
  • Another new befunge program
Haven't done much else though. Except play The Sims. Damn you, Maxis.

I'm getting close to a doable plot. Based around a suitably surreal dream I had, of course (other dream-related works: See Hell Meets Earth). Just a few things I need to work out, such as:
  • How, in the prologue, you make your escape from a company HQ when the company wants you dead (The escape must be made in a particular, very unlikely, fashion in order to tie in with the main part of the game). Not that I actually have to explain the details of your escape, but it would be helpful to have them worked out
  • How you explain to someone that you're not who they think you are, and that you're on their side when the circumstances would show otherwise
  • How the company you escaped from will work out how you escaped and consequently track you down
As you can tell I'm not giving too much away, since that would ruin the plot. But it also means you lot have no chance of helping me figure it out :(

Plus a few days later I had another suitably surreal dream, so the ideas gained from that will make their way in too :)

Oh yes, I can tell you that the city you're in will be adorned by various advertising billboards, for products such as 'Jizz Cola'. And (as promised for numerous other unfinished/abandoned works), The Playpen shall make an appearance, either as The Playpen Bar & Grill(e?), or The Playpen Gentleman's Club.

[edit]

Plus it (hopefully) won't be one of those annoying adventures which contains:
  • Bugs
  • Poor object coding meaning you need to guess the exact phrasing to use to do something
  • Inconsistencies in object coding (similar to above)
  • Crappy puzzles which you need to solve
  • Box quote thingies as title screens (Or any types of quoting whatsoever)
  • Crappy hint systems (Hopefully no hint system whatsoever, since the puzzles won't be difficult)
  • Vague bits where you have no idea what you're meant to be doing next
  • A scoring system, since the game will be fairly open-ended
  • Um, other annoying things
But it will contain:
  • A very large play area (About 64 kilometres * 64 kilometres)
  • Various modes of transport to get you to places quickly
  • A city layout which is at least partially random each time you play (It'll be on a bog standard American grid based street layout though)
  • Something else which I've forgotten
Basically I'm aiming for a cyberpunk GTA written as a text adventure. Dunno how it'll turn out though, but if I can get a good city sim running then most of the game will be based about evading, killing or following people as opposed to crappy puzzle solving. As the Inform designer's manual says, you should aim for a consistent simulation of a subset of reality. Or something like that.

/me is on the *cough*PS2*online*beta*trails*cough* but I'm not supposed to talk about it. That means for one or two nights most weeks until about the end of the year, I am obliged to play games. Games that appear on my doormat in brown envelopes without me having to buy them. But I can't tell you about it.

And no, you can't have any cast offs.

Moo!
  • A befunge quine that draws itself using the TURT turtle graphics fingerprint - take a look at the output!
  • Another update to !Befunge, featuring yet more bug fixes, some handy text insertion modes, a load of new fingerprints, and a dynamic fingerprint system
  • A couple more Befunge bits
For non-Befunge fans (i.e. all of you) I'll hopefully be starting on something else soon. Still haven't worked out the missing bits of the IF plot though :(
