Good god, you only need to do it once. Are you really so lazy that you can't read the two or three (not hundreds at all) numbers for your make of equipment? Perhaps you'd like someone to come round your house and set it all up for you? Or maybe someone to watch it all for you and just tell you the interesting bits? A 4-in-1 remote I've got has about 10 to 20 codes each for VCRs and TVs for the popular brands, some of them even more. Plus having the codes as an industry standard doesn't neccesarily mean that the standard will be supported (Which I know is also a flaw in my argument for the touch screen remote), for example my sky remote doesn't work with the TV and the TV remote doesn't work with the video. Also the current code system is useless if the remote you want to program doesn't know about the device you want it to control, meaning you need to resort to manual programming (Unlike a proper system where the device transmits all the information to the remote). Having someone do it for me could be useful though
But still only one *pre-recorded* format. I know that if you roll your own there are *two* main formats that are already finding dominance (both of which are supported in the latest Panasonic drives), but in reality who does this in their own home? There's no problem with formats when you're just viewing something from your local Blockbuster. Remember that I'm talking about the future here, when DVD will have replaced VHS. Thus you either record on DVD (Or perhaps hard disc, but that'll place a limit on how much you can store), or not at all.

Remember that I'm talking about the future here, when DVD will have replaced VHS. Thus you either record on DVD (Or perhaps hard disc, but that'll place a limit on how much you can store), or not at all. If you're talking about the future of recording, why are you talking about DVD in the first place? Copying TV shows to DVD is never going to be as popular as something simpler such as a tivo/sky plus/etc. "just record my stuff" machine, probably built into/in with other consumer hardware. Store something perminantly? Nah, just download it. I know I do
I've already got the TV (and radio) tuner card - a whole 30 quid which I bought just to transfer VHS to MPEG and found it had great timeshifting software - and it's getting hard to find graphics cards *without* TV out these days. The PC plays DVDs and games too. The only thing stopping me ditching the VCR and going for using the computer is that the computer and TV are at different ends of the living room, so I either have to move everything around or get very long cables
So I can't see DVD taking off for recording - let's face it, Betamax was superior, Minidiscs are superior, but they were for gadget freaks and purists only too ________ Cheers, Rich.
