What about The Sixth Sense,
Never saw it. Don't like hype. Plus, someone told me the ending. Didn't sound that good.

Wild Things,
Too busy looking at the lezzy kissing and threesome action to remember the plot ;) Seriously though, yes, good film.

Twelve Monkeys,
OK, I'll give you that one.

Signs,
You already said Sixth Sense, you can't count it twice ;)

And it was s***. Even The Vigay says so.

(the new) Planet of the Apes,
Oh, f*** off. A s*** film with a chimpletely contrived last few seconds tacked on that even the director didn't know why.

Vanilla Sky,
Never saw it. Don't like Tom Cruise. Saw Minority Report and hated the smug b******'s face. Hoped he got caught, but he didn't.

Couldn't watch another Cruister film until Last Samurai.

Unbreakable,
You already counted Six Sense... woah! deja vu! ;)

Pulp Fiction,
That had an ending? I thought it disappeared up its own navel in a puff of illogic ;)

Phone Booth....
Pretty boy lives. Much more suprising if he'd have taken a bullet. It played out pretty much exactly how you'd expect, apart from a franchise-opening minor twist that is, in itself, hackneyed if you've ever watched Nightmare on Elm Street or indeed pretty much any movie ever.

Plus, Schumacher is a f***ing hack.

need I go on?
Quite frankly, yes. Come on, you can't match any of those against something like Usual Suspects. :P

[edit] I'm adding one to my own list however - Memento had a great ending. Beginning. Whatever. Which just made Insomnia, by the same director, such a huge dissapointment, played straight out of the big book of Hollywood cliches. Where's the possiblity for moral ambiguity if the subject of the woman's quandry is fucking dead?

The original, Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes), was good, so I expect Vanilla Sky was a load of trousers.

Slightly older than a decade though. Christ, it's almost as old as me! =:-o

If were talking about older films Easy Rider they both died in the end.

Not really that suprising - bad men die at the end of the film, no matter how much they might have redeemed themselves in the interim. Not that they did. But anyway, don't get me started on my Leon vs. Nikita diatribe! ;)

Although yes, the manner of their deaths was shocking.

Given the film's age, you should really already be aware of that if you're even remotely interested in that kind of film. And if you're not, well, not really spoiling anything is it? :)

BTW: in Close Encounters, aliens did it.

You cranky old ***********r ;)

Here's another couple, one older by a bit than a decade, but compare and contrast:

Licence to Kill (1989) : Hardly dated; original contemporary storyline; unpretentious revenge story but clever, quite original ending.
Goldeneye (1995): More recent but hackneyed, tired megalomaniac baloney which takes Bond and Bond-girls right back to the beginning. Villain and super-project destroyed at the end. What a letdown after the work done by Dalton

Hmm... that's open to debate. I don't think he lived. What was he injected with?

How about:

- One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
- A Clockwork Orange
- American Beauty (at least I didn't predict the ending)
- Requiem For A Dream

I don't think that's how the game was played - he survived the sniper rifle, so he survived the game. To then kill the guy when he's in the ambulance would have broken the psycho's own rules. He was a sick fuck, but in his own mind a moral man. Plus, someone else gave the injection, didn't they?

Sixties and seventies, weren't they? Not from the past decade, certainly.

Cuckoos nest ended pretty much the way you would expect - I fought the law, and the law won. Clockwork Orange I never saw all the way through - after all the hype, I found it a little dull apart from a few bits of the old ultraviolence.

- American Beauty (at least I didn't predict the ending)
Sorry, but this must be the most over-rated piece of crap it's ever been my misfortune to sit through. What exactly did everyone see in this film!?
- Requiem For A Dream
Mmm, Jennifer Connelly... Yeah, good film. The ending was still kind of expected - drug users have fun to start with, but come to sticky end - but I guess the intensity was unexpected.

Obviously neither of you really watched the film. After he was injected (a relaxant of some sort, or a drowsiness-inducing painkiller probably), the sniper tells him that he has gotten away this time and it's good that he came clean with his wife, but that he had better STAY honest and good, because the sniper would "be watching"...

So he survived :)

Sorry I couldn't resist - my girlfriend's uni showed it (they abuse a spare auditorium with a projector to show free movies :)) just about a week ago, so it's still fresh in my mind. Otherwise I'd probably be as clueless as the rest of you ;)
