I'm wondering now whether the Pro is necessary. What more does it offer compared to the higher-spec MacBook?

Better graphics card (wouldn't really notice, unless Snow Leopard really makes use of it), firewire (nice because I can use it for my external hard drive and save my USB ports, but that's less of an issue compared to my Mini because I won't need an external keyboard/mouse), and a 15" screen (which could be a downside because it's less portable).

Interesting new Apple stuff. I still wish they'd do a smaller one.

I'm not in the market for a laptop right now though, having just bought myself an Aspire One last weekend. It's cute, and it fits nicely in my bag to carry to and from everywhere. I went for the windows one so I can use things like Picasa, and can also install some other windows only stuff I have (World of Warcraft, anyone? smile). I like it. It's a nice little machine.

Andy.

It's useful for me - I want to play top end games on it, so the graphics stuff is good. More importantly though, I really don't like 13" screens - 15" is the smallest I can cope with, as much as because of my bad eyesight as anything else. (Was even thinking about the 17" if they'd been fully upgraded, but no matter - 15" is better for portability anyway.) Firewire is less important for me currently, although it's nice to have it just in case.

But yeah, I suspect a lot of people who *would* have gone for a Macbook Pro will now plump for a normal Macbook.

Would have been nice to have a matt display rather than a glossy. Not a deal-breaker by any means, but I would have plumped for the matt if it'd been available.

I see there's an option for a 7200RPM hard drive instead of 5400RPM. Would this be much noisier? Is the extra speed worth it? Main uses would be compiling code (XCode, command line), photo manipulation, and audio editing.

Can't answer that for you. I'll be getting the faster speed because I'll be doing a lot of video editing.

Went to look at the new laptops at the Apple dealer in town today. They are really nice - I love the huge touchpad and the 4 fingered Expose gestures. Unfortunately they didn't have the low-end MacBook Pro in stock, so I'll be buying online.

I've decided against the 7200RPM because I think it'll be louder and hotter, and it's only really beneficial for writing very large files. But I'm really tempted to bump up the RAM and disc space as I like to run lots of programs at the same time, and hoard every digital photo and podcast.

2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
320GB Serial ATA @ 5400
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter

I'm too scared to add it to my basket! tongue

I think I've got one of those spare - it came with my MacBook Pro earlier in the year, and there's no port to plug it into (it's already got a DVI connector on it). And there's nothing it can plug into on the laptop...

Yours if you want it.

Much appreciated, thankyou, I've but unfortunately I've just confirmed my order. Besides, it's probably a mini-DVI not mini-DisplayPort cable.

I'm really happy to be joining the MacBook Pro owners club! grin

If any new RISC OS hardware became available I'd be all over that like a rash (I've owned both an A9 & an Iyonix) otherwise it'll be a newer model iMac.

Currently using the older model 24" (2.33 Ghz C2D, 7600 GT graphics & 3GB RAM).

I think I'm kinda regressing as I get older - i've got a stack of SGI workstations, which are used once in a while for 3D and development tinkering, an Apple G3 "Pismo" PowerBook (love that machine!) for general bloggery and suchlike, with a Blue Dalmatian iMac G3 to keep it company...I've just bought an Atari ST (a 1040 STE, woo!) as I always wanted one and I'd really like to be able to get my hands on a RiscPC (two or three Slices in the case), with monitor and the like - as long as it's got ethernet and a web-browser, I can find a use for it and I always loved the Archie - my school won an A310 on a BBC quiz show when I was a nipper, I nearly got my hands on an A5000 as a teenager, before my dad chose a PC instead, and I had an A3010 for a while a few years ago, but never got time to get to grips with it and had to sell it...

Any ideas on where, how much such a machine might be? A StrongArm would be great, but I guess an earlier machine is just as good for my purposes...

Thanks!

TI already have an ARM Cortex-based SoC shipping (OMAP3530), and apparently Freescale will be selling their one soon too (i.MX515). Now if only someone would hurry up and release a netbook using one of them, so I/we can start throwing our hard-earned cash (and RISC OS kernels) at them!

Congrats on the purchase! The 7200rpm driver is virtually silent (unless Apple decided to change which kind of drive they are putting in their Pros).

My company's chips (Qualcomm) are going to be powering some of these netbooks! Most of my work right now is done on our prototype Cortex-A8 platform in Linux. I love the platform. There's absolutely no reason why RISC OS couldn't be ported to the device - someone just needs to put the time in. Makes me wish I had more time.

One thing I've noticed about the aluminium MacBooks in this cold weather - they are very, very cold when you rest your hands on them. I'm going to have to switch to the high performance GPU to heat this thing up!

And thus, my next computer is: An emulated ARM Cortex-A8. The emulation isn't complete yet, but it seems to work well enough to load the beagleboard bootloader and the sample linux kernel. And although the video clip test fails (no v4l device) there is enough video hardware emulated for the bootloader to show the beagleboard logo. Which is surely enough for people to start poking RISC OS kernels into it without having to fork out on real hardware.
