Are we using UK Resistance for all our PS3 facts then? Good! I shall post this:

You should have got your PS3 on ebay. People who bought them to flog on ebay are losing money hand over fist.
Actually, there was someone who managed to flog a *preorder slip* for £300. But I can't be bothered searching for it (The URL, that is. Not the slip. I'm not stupid enough to buy a PS3 or a PS3 pre-order slip )

Gamers worldwide finally grab ahold of Playstation 3 consoles
That's a lie, clearly.

[edit]

In the basement of Virgin Megastore's flagship London outlet, hardcore video game fans who waited in line for more than a day for the midnight launch were rewarded by Sony, which gifted each of the first 125 a new 42-inch Sony TV.
Well, I guess that could make it marginally worth buying a PS3.

Yes. UK:R have been on about shops bribing people to order PS3s for ages.

I took the COWARDS ROUTE and just bought new SMB. Yay, everyone owning the same games because there aren't enough good ones to go around. (And I bought new PW & STALKER, of course). So expect some incredibly ranty rants about how crap everything is tonight. Or complete silence, which is likely to mean it isn't entirely crap. Or that it killed my PC.

Well, I just went down into town and every shop that sells gaming stuff has PS3s left. None of them have any Wiis left. I also didn't see anyone with a PS3 shaped bag lurking round.

I haven't checked all the links on this page, but I keep getting told at work about how some shop in London gave 100 free 42" TVs and a taxi ride home to people who bought PS3s. Details on El Reg.

Just how fucking desperate do you have to be to a) give away 25 grands worth of stuff to shift your console and b) still have consoles to buy without pre-orders on launch day anyway?

I also seem to remember you buying the crappiest release games out there (and Zelda). Got anything else since then? Bought any of the good games?
Well, we got Zelda and obviously Wii Sports, but we did also get Call of Duty 3 (pretty good, aside from the fact that the remote isn't really set up for being a gun because it's flat rather than angled) and GT Pro Racing. Later we bought Trauma Centre, Mario 64, Super Monkey Ball and Excite Truck.

Red Steel got poor reviews, btw (look at http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/redsteel/index.html).

The PS3, don't forget, has the best proper racing games, hands down.
Has it? Has it? Excite Truck has its deficiencies, but it's the most fun driving game I've played in years
By proper, I primarily meant simulations (i.e. GT, F1 Championship). I probably should have clarified that. Also, the career modes in Ridge Racer and Need For Speed are more immersive (for me) than Excite Truck, which is a fun game to play once in a while.

It also argably has the best RPGs. Look at The Elder Scrolls Oblivion, which was just released this week over here.
And which is delayed in Europe for no good reason. But it's out for XBox and PC too, so it's hardly a big selling point for the PS3.
Well, it is if you are thinking about buying a console. All the versions are a little different, but the PS3 version has another clan or whatever they call it.

When all that's said and done, it is the best media player you can get your hands on for the price. Blu-ray movies are *amazing* if you have the right setup.

Yes, but I've also heard that it gets much better past the first few levels - which most reviews neglected to mention.

Real life is bad enough without simulating more of it

Fairy nuff. Not played Ridge Racer (Riiiiidge Racer!), but I saw NFS on the PS3 last year and it left me cold.

Nah! I got mine delivered from Amazon!

A 42" TV wouldn't fit in my living room anyway. My 37" one is good enough though - and Motorstorm looks seriously awesome in 1080i. grin

So good in fact, I've been playing it all afternoon and not even opened "Resistance:Fall of Man" yet.

Sorry to butt in, but I expect Paul is busy playing with Motorstorm still. smile

I found the motion control *very* good. Pulling up to do a wheelie on a bike is satisfying. However, I think I prefer the standard analogue controller, perhaps because of the lack of feedback that I would expect from turning a steering wheel.

In Resistance, you can shake the controller to put yourself out when you are on fire. smile

hehe. Yup! Seriously addictive!

To be honest, I couldn't really get the hang of the motion controller with Motorstorm - but that may be because I've been playing too long on the analogue controller and switching to motion seemed overly sensitive and I kept wheelspinning.

Still not played Resistance yet, but downloaded the GT HD demo and Casino Royale 1080i preview! Very crisp graphics on HD. big smile

Configured for network play, joined the Sony Network (which is pretty nice - and free, unlike XBox Live) but I can't seem to join online Motorstorm games, although I can get to the lobby ok, so port forwarding/NAT etc all appears ok. Perhaps the servers are busy, or I need to fiddle with settings a bit more!

Can you get Blu-Ray movies in England yet? I have the Casino Royale disc, and it is *excellent*. However, Crank has the best picture quality by far.

http://www.playfuls.com/news_06689_PS3s_French_Debut_A_Total_Disaster_95_of_Consoles_Left_Unsold.html

Close to 22hrs the journalists receive an SMS from the French Xbox marketing team: “the Xbox team wishes you a good evening” ("la Xbox team vous souhaite une bonne soirée"). Soon after that a small military boat flanked with “Xbox loves you” messages appears, carrying a group of Microsoft employees who defy “the enemy”. The world around them laughs but not the Sony employees.

Well, the installation only takes up around 6GB, but the engine is a load of wank and stutters and eats virtual memory for breakfast. The game shows (some) promise however, so if I can convince it to run properly it may actually be good.

Oh, and you won't be able to load autosaves if your Windows username contains a space indiff

STALKERisms:

* I managed to get it to run without chugging all over the place. According to the website, the specs on the back of the box are wrong. Instead of the minimum amount of RAM being 512MB, it's actually 750MB. And instead of the recommended amount being 1GB, it's 2GB indiff
* But even now that it's running properly, there is a memory leak which causes it to crash after a few hours.
* It can be very confusing until you actually work out how to use the PDA
* The map in the PDA can't be used because it's shit
* The mission scripts can be buggy. E.g., I rescue Mole from a load of army guys, he leads me outside to a tunnel going underground, tells me to go inside while another army group search through the place I just rescued him from. I go inside, kill a few people (including an invisible thing shock), come back out. Mole then decides to run off right into the middle of the army guys, and gets himself killed. Fastforward a day or two later, and I'm travelling through that area again. This time I decide to go in and kill the army guys, since I've still got an outstanding task to collect some information from (the now dead) Mole. After many failed attempts at killing the army guys (not helped by the fact that they can sometimes shoot through walls, and appear to have guns 100x more accurate than mine) I finally kill them all, and get the information from Mole, which he should have given me when I first met him. The information tells me to go into the tunnel and retrieve something.
* 90% of the guns are crap. They (a) have crap accuracy, and (b) do crap damage (unless you're lucky enough to hit someone in the head. But even then, it's likely to take a few shots to kill someone). If you're lucky and Mole tells you the information you need right away, then you should find a decent gun hidden down the tunnels along with the other stuff, so that may help things.
* Do not go over the weight limit. It makes the difference between being able to run for 1 mile and being able to run for 10 yards. This fact comes in very important when you start having to run from one end of the map to the other. Besides, it's not like you're ever going to use those 1000 rounds of pistol ammo anyway tongue
* More mission script moose. You can complete a time-limited task and have it marked as complete, but if there's a reward associated with it, you still stand a chance of not getting the reward if the timer expires. Which isn't very helpful if you're on the other side of the map and over the weight limit tongue
* Only some of the dialog is spoken, for the rest you'll have to read the text.
* They use irradiated areas to cordon off bits of the map, preventing you from taking shortcuts everywhere. There are also many locked doors and other impassable barriers (including the humble wire fence), so don't expect a fully explorable game world.
* Don't go near radiation until you know how to determine if you're going in too deep, and how to treat it. Vodka and anti-rad syringes only seem to treat radiation that is already in your body - so don't bother taking them before entering an area.
* More scripting moose. I had to go to a bar in a town, but the only way to get there appeared to be through a warehouse. Every time I went in the warehouse, I was told to leave. The guy telling me to leave was wrong, because that is the correct way to get to the bar.
* The UI is a bit cack. The mouse pointer moves far too slow, you can't split stacks of items properly (only move them around one item at a time), the right-click menus are dodgy, the aforementioned PDA map is impossible to use, and the only way to see the current game time or an accurate measure of your radiation level is to open your inventory. And the inventory screen, trade screen, and loot screen are three completely seperate entities - so it's impossible to drop items during trading or looting, etc. And although you can change weapons without opening the inventory screen, the only way to switch between weapons of the same class (e.g. two SMGs) is to open the inventory screen. And while you're busy messing with the fullscreen inventory screen, expect to get attacked by sneaky enemies that are virtually silent in their approach.
* The NPC dialogue can also be confusing. The line "I'm here about the job" (or "I'm here for the job", or something) would suggest to any ordinary person that you're asking about a job offer. But in this game, it actually means that you've completed a job for someone, and are there for your reward. You may never have seen the person before, and they may have not much idea who you are or what job you've completed, or you may not even know yourself what job you've completed, but it's fairly safe to say that if you say "I'm here about the job" to someone then they'll give you a "worthwhile reward". Which, after battling through tens of army men while trying to travel through/sneak into places, isn't very worthwhile at all.
* Hand grenades are still the worst invention ever in computer games. When you throw these ones, the most important thing to know is that they will be thrown from slightly to the right of your viewpoint (unlike most other games which seem to cop-out and throw them directly from the camera, even though you can clearly see them being hurled from your right hand located on the right side of your body to the right of the camera).
* The AI is also a bit dumb, expect them to run around in circles even if a grenade you threw lands nowhere near them. And also expect them to shoot at you through walls every so often. But luckily, there are a couple of places where they're dumb enough to come at you one at a time, and miss wildly when they try to shoot at you. Very handy when getting rid of lots of enemies, if you're lucky enough to find a sweet spot. And expect friendly NPCs to push you out of the way if you're blocking their path, instead of stopping or trying to walk around you - which isn't very useful if you're trying to hide behind something for cover.
* The sawnoff shotgun takes two hours to reload, and only does damage to an enemy if you insert the barrel down his throat before pulling the trigger.
* If you're currently reloading, you need to wait for the reload animation to finish before pressing down the trigger, otherwise you won't begin firing once reloading is complete.
* Despite the action being set over several days/weeks, you don't appear to need to eat, sleep, or take toilet breaks. There is food, but its only purpose is to recover health.
* There don't appear to be any women.
* Nor do there appear to be any vehicles you can drive.
* I haven't found a chainsaw yet, either. I'm beginning to think they forgot to put one in.

But providing you (a) can run the game without it chugging, (b) have a decent gun, (c) aren't over burdened, and (d) don't mind being completely confused as bits of important dialogue whizz by in 0.1 seconds and you get subtask after subtask after sidemission after sidemission thrown at you, the game seems to be quite fun.

So? That still doesn't make it any good tongue

I bet that if there were more than 165,000 Wiis available during the Wii launch, the Wii would have outsold the PS3. It's just the case that the PS3 had better stock numbers in the UK for the launch weekend (probably because they cut out the hardware backwards compatability, and had dismal sales in other countries tongue)
