Strange that they still appear to have stock everywhere. Not exactly massive demand.

If that's true and not a result of some massaging of the figures, then it just goes to show how bloody stupid the UK consumers are.

I've previously said I'd be more inclined to buy a PS3 than any other console so that I could play my older (PS1/2) games on it, but the issue of backwards compatibility that applies in this country creates a massive reduction in that inclination - add to that the price we're expected to pay for a machine which isn't as backwards compatible as it could be, and that inclination has its very own added dis.

The idea of UK consumers therefore buying it in great numbers, to me, suggests that we may as well send Sony a letter saying "Please rip us off some more!"

Nope. Sort the backwards compatibility out or (actually, make that and! smile ) drop the price significantly, and I might consider it. Otherwise, Sony, you can shove it. I'll carry on with my PS2 until I no longer have anything to play on it - and given that I don't buy the games until their expensive shelf life is over and they become cheap , and I don't get a lot of time to sit and play them, I suspect that if games stopped appearing for it now mine would still have a useful life ahead of it of at least 10 years. tongue

And what does that prove? That Argos had X in stock, sold Y and then had 34 left over. Probably ordered more stock due to heavy demand.

Gamestation in Portsmouth had 15 PS3s in stock lunchtime today and only 4 Wii's - does that mean Wii's are selling faster? No - just that they ordered more PS3s.

They didn't sell out in America either, and there was greatly reduced stock due to the problems producing enough blue ray drives.

Consoles always sell out in the first week, and again as soon as new stock comes in; they had to airlift in enough PS2s for Christmas by hiring a monster Russian ex-military cargo plane, and PS2s used standard parts.

The fact is, if a console's popular, you can't make them fast enough. You can't just "order in more", because there shouldn't be enough to go round. Everywhere I look, PS3s are still in stock.

Don't just take my word for it:
http://kotaku.com/gaming/jack-tretton/jack-tretton-owes-penny-arcade-13200-235648.php

I'm surprised you're falling for the hype; while Sony may have "sold" lots of consoles to shops, have these shops gone on to offload them on punters? Not from what I can see.

I'm more interested in gameplay and MotorStorm and Resistance are two "must have" games. Far better, and (importantly) more fun than similar games I've played on PS2 or XBox360.
Resistance certainly beats Gears of War for playability factor (and IMHO graphics quality) and the online play is superb (and free, unlike XBox Live).

Everyone who has come round and played MotorStorm for more than about 10 minutes has said they'd buy a PS3 just for that!

Yep. I've never really been one for hype. Indeed, I vowed not to buy another Sony product after the way they treated Lik Sang. At the end of the day, I want a console for relaxation and 'play'. Something away from the computer that I can sit on the comfy sofa and play on the big screen for FUN!

I've had most consoles over the years (3DO, Dreamcast, PS2 and XBox) and only really the Dreamcast has the best playable games. I never got addicted to anything on the PS2 or XBox. The 3DO had a few flagship games (the original and best Need for Speed and the excellent first person shooter, Killing Time) but ultimately went the way of the Dreamcast (still the best console IMHO). I'll probably get rid of the PS2 and XBox and keep the Dreamcast and now the PS3.
I'll also probably keep the 3DO, purely for nostalgia sake (and the odd game of Need for Speed).

I bought the PS3 simply because IMHO it was the best system after playing on both the Wii and XBox 360 for some time. I certainly don't have any brand loyalty to Sony, but I did want to wait for it to come out before I decided which 'Next Gen' console to get, purely so I could say that I gave them all a fair review. All I can say is that I'm glad I had the patience to wait! smile

STALKERisms:
The underground certainly seems to be "where it's at" with STALKER, as far as wierd stuff goes. I'm underground again, and there are lots more invisible things, which enjoy levitating objects and throwing them at me unhappy And there's a nasty fireball thing, and big stomping lion-sounding things which could have been people at one stage. If you can see something, chances are bullets will stop it... but what if your enemy is just a ball of fire or electricity? :S

The surface is almost a completely different game. There you mostly have mostly humans, who lack special powers like turning invisible and causing objects to levitate. Instead it's a case of sneaking through undergrowth and abandoned buildings, picking off your enemies one at a time. The AI does actually seem to be quite good, but also quite bad in some respects (they seem to be able to hear you the moment you start running, even if it's only for a split second. And when they hear you they'll call out, which in turn reveals their location to you) There are some environmental hazards on the surface, but once you can spot them they're not quite as dangerous as constantly getting metal cans thrown at you by some invisible force tongue

It's changed again!

No invisible things underground this time, but there were lots of zombies (which can use guns!) and ex-humans running around like dogs. And the surface was fairly zombified too. And I found some even better guns. And some rocket launchers. Yay! But still no chainsaw, and some bits of the game seem to be signifcantly more crash-inducing than others unhappy

Well, I've made it to the power plant. Except you can't see it where I am, because while running away from a zone blowout (which seems to have not ended after about half an hour. Yay, bugs!), I managed to find a spot where I could climb over the carefully placed fence that's meant to keep you inside the disgustingly confined game world.

And thus, I present to you, the end of the world! (and after finding I can sneak past the blowout area, some shoddy level design when I approach the power plant from the side)

Well, that's STALKER over with. Apparently you need to get inside the power plant before the blowout, even though there's a perfectly safe area of the level to hide in outside. Also, the ending is shit. I don't mind the fact that there are multiple endings, and that the way you play the game seems to affect the outcome, but what I do take objection to is that the game takes away control of your character at the end. Instead of having a 3rd party judge your character, your character judges himself. This means that the judgement will be wrong. My character seems to think he wants to be rich, when really all I was interested in was finding out WTF was going on, and perhaps killing this Sterlok person (but only because I've been told I need to kill him). If a third party had judged me, then I'd be fine with that - I was carrying around a lot of money (probably because expensive things are easy to find and sell, and mission rewards always seem to involve a lot of money, and there's no way to drop money, and all the guns I'd looted were way better than all the guns that I'd found people selling), but being told I want to be rich (and killed for it) just because the game burdens you with effectively useless money is a bit shit.

Gah - I actually like the God of War series (having done the first one, and demo'd the second), but now I'm slipping from "not going to by a PS3" to "not even going to buy PS2 games". What the fuck are they playing at? They seem to be in complete freefall ATM.

OK then, could you go from a couple of save-points back, buy up a load of sh!t guns and throw them away? Or fire off a load of ammo or something? What is most expensive? Single shot bazookas? I'll have 20. Then fire 'em off at those pesky carniverous trees or whatever is least significant.

AFAIK the last section of the game doesn't have anyone to buy anything from. And it's too late now, because I've installed the patch (which is incompatible with original save games).

Thats a shame.
I saw elsewhere you're playing through again in a different style. Thats good, because it occured to me that you've come across the 'Choose your own adventure' ending, where your decisions have little effect on the outcome. And I'm curious to know what other endings there are. Hopefully this time you'll hit the scooby-do ending, where you'd've gotten away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids.

I don't like Sony fanboys, I get a lot of people who are die hard PS/PS2/PSP/PS3, and they make unfair polls:

Best Games Console is ...

a) Playstation 3 (pick me!)
b) X-Box 360
c) nintendo wii (pick this and your dead!)
I like the Wii and the 360, might get a Wii soon, or am I converting to Macs instead? Hmm, my trusty MacFormat mag will tell me the answer.
