I was going to convert a BASIC adventure I wrote a couple of years ago for the Beeb into a RISC OS-style "app. " (just double-click) as it was never released. Is there any chance I could send it to Acorn Arcade for the free games section?

This may take longer than expected. Viewfinder doesn't allow Mode7 which means a few changes to make to the game.

That's an idea thanks. I started trying to convert it to Mode 28 with COLOUR instead of CHR$ and I wouldn't mind doing a decent title page as it's RISC OS. Ultimately I'll post both BBC and RISC OS versions hopefully.

A couple of things, Andrew:

(And I hasten to add, because I managed to upset someone quite badly with some suggestions this week, that these aren't intended as put downs or whatever.)

Your application directory is !DominionRISC, but the system variable you set up in the !Run file is <DomRISC$Dir> - given the application name, the system variable should be <DominionRISC$Dir> (If you've registered the appname DominionRISC)

Secondly, you only make use of the system variable in the !Run file, and in the program code you do:

*Dir <DomRISC$Dir>

Thereafter, the code is loading/opening files from the current directory. What you should be doing is prefixing the file name in those operations with <DominionRISC$Dir> - for example:

CHAIN"<DominionRISC$Dir>.Dominio"

Within the context of a single tasking program, on a single tasking machine, that's fine - but while the program single tasks, it's running in a multi tasking environment.

I haven't actually played it yet because when I ran VRPCSESATLAETC something was interfering; every couple of seconds, the system was pausing for a couple of seconds, making it more or less unusable. I get that every once in a while, but can't be bothered to work out what it is. I'll try again when I have less running.
