So apparently if you buy the Orange Box from Valve, and already have Half-Life 2, you can "gift" this to someone who doesn't.

http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=news&id=1237

But most of the people I know will have it already. I mean, why else install Steam?

So, there should be a few copies of Half-Life 2 going begging. Perhaps we should find people who want them?

I haven't got HL2 yet - but then, I don't have a suitable PC to play it on. (The laptop probably wouldn't cope with it - on disk space alone, if nothing else).

Don't you already have a copy of Half-Life 2? tongue

Also, I am one of the many who has a free copy of HL2/Ep 1 to give away.

Actually if you read the content of that linked post carefully, I think you'll find that it's Half-Life 2 Episode 1 that I have a copy of - I give it its full name.

You played Ep 1 without playing the main game first? Madness!

I've sent you my copy of HL2 to your email address. Assuming the address you're using for TIB is correct wink

Have fun not playing Portal, Ep 2, or TF2! smile

Actually I have played HL2, but just not my own copy, and my machine has since been reinstalled anyway. I have HL1 and HL2Ep1 in boxed versions. Thanks though, I'm going to replay it all again now!

Am I right or misremembering that 'the orange box' (a bundle of HL2, HL2e1/e2 and a couple of other bits and bobs) has now been released for some of the consoles?

<checks>

Ah, not for another month or so.

That'll be another reason to get a PS3, since it won't be on the PS2 - but like the PS3 itself, I'm not willing to pay the initial price tag, so I'll just have to wait until both come down in price. smile

Whether I'm insane or not depends on what time of day it is, and how long it is since I last had anything banananananana flavoured.

As for the PS3, this is old ground. The only reason I want a PS3 is because of my PS2 games. I know there are compatibility issues, and I haven't yet checked which of my games are okay. If I hadn't spent however much money on my games I could go for one of the other consoles instead, but the bottom line is that I have bought these games, so that's that.

I know I could just ebay them or something, but then I'll be selling them for less than I'd paid for them (which has always been at a greatly reduced price anyway, because I'm a scrooge) having not actually played most of them. I don't like that as an option because it involves me being out of pocket not having benefited from the initial purchase.

As it stands that's what I'll end up doing with those that the PS3 doesn't like anyway - but that'll be fewer than if I switch to another console.

I think what I need to do is have a good tidy up, sort out all my games and check them for compatibility. Those that are okay I can put to one side, and those that the PS3 doesn't like I should start playing; get them played so that when they're no longer any use to me, I can sell them knowing that I have benefited from however much I lose on their sale.

You do realise the new 40GB PS3 has no PS2 support? None. Nichts. Nilch. Nildo. Meanwhile the 60GB version with gimped PS2 emulation is only available while stocks last.

That's just silly unhappy for the very reasons that him above highlighted. I just got my sister's old PS1 a couple of months ago, and then a few weeks ago I got a secondhand PS2 from a work colleague (great because it saves us the bother of buying a DVD player, or switching on the livingroom computer as we'd previously done - of course, the wireless joypad isn't as good as the Media Centre remote, but it'll do), and to bring a point to this rambling tale, I can play both sets of games on the PS2, more or less. If I were upgrading and I'd invested a lot, I'd go for the same brand for backwards-compatibility; I'm sure they're alienating a lot of their potential market through that move.

It's going to be a support nightmare too.

Customer: This game and or peripheral doesn't work on my PS3.
Assistant: Is it the original 20GB PS3, the 80GB PS3 with hardware PS2 compatibility, the 60GB PS3 with hardware PS2 compatibility, the 60GB PS3 with mixed PS2 hardware/software emulation, or the 40GB without PS2 backwards compatibility? Does it have memory slots? Two or four USB ports? Are you using the original SIXAXIS controller, the new DUALSHOCK3 controller, or an old PS2 controller?
Customer: Err... I got the black one.

I wish Microsoft and Sony would create one console each and just sell them without all these variations and options. They're ruining the best thing about consoles which was that they were a fixed spec and things just worked.

Yes, I am aware of that, and that Sony are basically taking the piss out of the British public. However, it has about as much relevance as the price of socks, because it makes eff all difference to me.

My PS2 was second hand. My previous PS2 (which lasted many years before it went kapput) was second hand. The PS1 I had before that was (guess... yup, you guessed it) second hand.

Second hand is cheaper. I'm a scrooge. This is a compatible combination.

If the dodgily-backwards-compatible model is no longer made and sold, the ones already 'out there' aren't going to suddenly stop working overnight (in much the same way that RISC OS didn't die just because Acorn are no longer here) and I will eventually buy one of those second hand.

Almost two and a half years later, and I've finally bought The Orange Box for my PS3! smile

£12.50 from play.com in their two for £25 offer. A much more acceptable price to me than the original. Did I mention before that I was a scrooge?

It's just a shame I'm far too busy to actually play it yet. unhappy

He is sorta' right though. I am (or was) a PS fanboy but I very much find myself using the 360 and 9 times out of 10, FPS games are better on the 360. 10 out of 10 times it's even better on PC.

Still £12.50 is an insane price and is more then good enough at that price. Just try and get it on PC if and when you can. smile

In order to get it for the PC, I would first have to purchase a PC for games (because I'm unwilling to load games onto my 'work' laptop) - and I don't want to do that.

I don't think it's an unreasonable wish to keep my personal and professional hardware separate - so having a console that I use for games and a laptop that I use for work strikes me as being perfectly sensible.

Of course, I could still keep the hardware separate by having one PC specifically for games, but since I already have a piece of hardware suitable for games (being as it was designed for the purpose), along with a large collection of games for it, why should I?

Two words for you: control interface.

Never have been able to use those silly joypad things that console gamers seem so fond of. Especially for RTS type games, which I enjoy every bit as much as FPS.
