Greetings,

Im looking for a bit of help here,Ive got a Acorn Achimedes, spec to follow in case it helps anybody.
Acorn Archimedes A440/1 Computer (27-AKB44-1000###)
>> o RISC OS 3.10 (upgraded from RISC OS 2)
>> o 4Mb Memory
>> o ARM 3 Processor
>> o 408Mb IDE hard disc drive
>> o Floppy Disc Drive - 640k, 800k RISC OS formats
>> also 360k, 720k PC MSDOS formats

Im looking for someone who might have an original or a copy of the Elite game on the Archimedes.

Obviously willing to pay for an original or even a copy, the game is on shareware i believe,so unless im wrong it wouldnt be breaking any copyright laws if the original wasnt availiable but someone was willing to do a straight disk copy for me.

Trying my best to keep retro gaming alive and just hope the community can bail me out here!

Thanks

retroboy

Thanks for the prompt reply Jeff, the problem with that is how does one get the source code from the internet and format it to run on an original machine,im not interested in running it on an emulator.

That is the version which will run on a real machine.

Just copy the zipfile onto a PC formatted floppy, then use your Arc to extract it to somewhere sensible.

If you don't have anything to read zip files on your arc then there's a read-only copy of !SparkPlug here (2nd item down).

It really is that simple. The Acorn emulators that exist are built upon soft ROMs which are identical to the original ROMs, which means that (to a 99% accuracy) any installed or downloaded RISC OS software will run the same on an emulated version as on a real version. Also, the freely-distributable version of ArcElite has no copy protection and is playable on any machine from the spec you mention (and below, too) right up to the more recent machines. I personally have played it on an A410/1, A5000, RiscPC and emulated on RedSquirel and VirtualRPC. Oh, and I also own it in boxed copies; a full set is a joy to behold, with ship data cards, traders' notepad, Elite poster, manual, novella, keystrip, the works...

Was the novella similar to Holdstock's (IIRC) the Dark Wheel?

The novella is The Dark Wheel, by Rob Holdstock.

Andy Redman's follow-up, Imprint, was frankly a disappointment. I still have a copy of the text somewhere. You can also read The Dark Wheel in various places, notably on Bell's site, here:

Back to more advice sadly chaps, apologies in advance.

The arc seems to accept a few different formats for its discs, but when i format a disc from the pc the arc doesnt recognise it.

I have tried specifying 800k format instead of the 1.44mb that the pc uses but to no avail.

Just cant seem to format it correctly still.

If it's an original floppy drive in the Arc, then it won't be able to read HD (High Density) floppies, - you might get away with formatting one as a 720KB disk on the PC, but I'm not sure Windows will let you do that these days.

If Windows won't let you format to 720KB (I can't be bothered putting a floppy in to check!) then you can always use the Arc to make a DOS formatted floppy.

I dimly recall something about covering one of the holes in the corner of an HD floppy to fool Windows into treating the disk as a DD one - not sure if that's actually required, but it might help - especially if the disk formats ok on the Arc, but then won't read on the Windows machine (of course, that could also be down to the various bits in the floppy drive being slightly out of alignment).

I would check, but the only non-Acorn machine I have with a floppy drive hasn't run Windows in some time.

I didn't realise it came with the original novella. Gringas and Birch really went to town. Didn't embarass Bell and Braben enough to get them to stay with the platform unfortunately.

Beg your pardon, you're entirely right. After reading your reply I went back and checked; Acorn Electron Elite has a copy of the novella, but Acorn Archimedes Elite doesn't. That said, the ArcElite version does come with the traders' notepad, the ship datacards, and the poster (among others), so it's not so bad - the only thing that no Acorn version ever came with (to my knowledge) is a copy of the ship identification chart. I have that from a Firebird copy.

The only problem with that is that the only version of the game ever released on a floppy WITHOUT the copy protection system (page X, line Y, word Z from the manual) is the Acorn User August 1995 cover floppy. Versions freely available online are also free of copy protection, but you don't seem to be having much luck with those. Any boxed copy will be an original protected floppy and although it should come with the manual, it's an annoying thing to have to keep doing.

I do have one spare boxed copy of ArcElite lying around though, if you really want it - I'll offer it at a low price (I'll have to check exact postage costs as I'm in Finland). The only ones on eBay right now seem to be Electron copies, which I suspect you're not really after.

Justin

I'm assuming you're in the UK, so it should be easy enough to work out; let's get in touch by email and we'll sort something out. You can contact me via the email on my site (follow the link that says "The Iron Lord" to the left of my post, you'll find it there); there's a box called Contact Me on the site (bottom right).

Jason
