Although, I was hoping you'd add valuable opinion and analysis that I could nick and assume as my own, instead of just posting the link like I did. :P

What I don't understand is why, if the resource (PS3s) is so limited, why they don't sell them at an increased price. OK, so they do actually want to sell out quickly, but its hardly a PR coup if there are hardly any to sell. And it sounds like they could have added a significant amount to the launch price and still sold out.
If they announced the way in which they planned to reduce the price as supply improved, I don't think anyone (well, anyone worth speaking to) would grumble as the price dropped.
As it is, Sony are basically giving money away to the touts.

To increase the price would be admit that they have a supply problem, wouldn't it?

Interestingly enough, this news hasn't made its way around the office network yet. Guess it just shows how much we care about the PS3 :P

Those ludicrous PS3 bundles are starting to look surprisingly attractive right now.
For resale, perhaps. Assuming there are actually people out there who want to own a PS3 :P

Bearing in mind the production problems... would it even be wise to buy one now even if you could get hold of one?

I suspect these first units will prove to be rather flakey. Just like the previous two Playstations...

In the long run, that would include me - but in the long run means not when it's first launched, with the teething troubles it's likely to have and the fact that I won't be able to get one at my favourite price (aka "cheap" ).

I have a fair old number of PS1 and PS2 games - most of which I haven't even started to play yet, so I don't want to switch to an alternative console platform and start again from scratch. And in time the games I want may not be available on the PS2, so I'll have to start buying for the PS3.

When the time comes (ie when the PS3 is deemed stable, and I can get one cheap) I'll have a PS3.

I won't. I have no intention of ever owning one myself.

The Wii, however, looks far more interesting...

But the 'Sold Out' sign does that. If they don't want to display that, they just need to charge more. If they do want to sell out for PR reasons, they could then gradually drop the price until they do just sell out in whatever timescale they choose.

If it can't play my existing PS1/2 games, then it doesn't look very interesting at all. :P

The insanity of it! :o

I wonder if the winning bidder will actually pay up, though - looking at the bid history, it looks like a couple of people put in stupidly high bids near the very end to ensure they won - the higher of the two in particular, but that two people did it backfired; until then the highest was just over $2K. Which personally, I think was stupidly high anyway!

(Of course, it only really backfired for the winning bidder - and who's to say the other stupidly high one wasn't a shill bid?)

I was going to buy one but they already have a line of 8 people outside my local Target in the middle of nowhere. Apparently it formed last night!

I read that hardly anyone is buying one to play. Most are buying to sell on eBay. So, who is buying them for $2000+ a pop?
