How is music written for games these days?? I have no idea anymore. I'm talking about formats by the way, not 'well you compose it, Steve...' Sooooo?? ________ [Steve] RiscPC SA & Duron 600@850 ICQ: 51028779 |

Hi... It varies - basically depends what sort of game and what platform. Generally games use either : CD audio MP3 MIDI Proprietry streaming format There may even still be some that use trackers or some derivative. It's just a matter of weighing up processor usage, what the game will be doing and how important the music is. You don't want 20-30% of your processor power being eaten up by the music playing if you are creating a high power 3d game. If you are streaming in the data for your levels MIDI or tracker are the routes to go (MIDI more generally these days). Proprietry streaming is used where you don't want to go down the MP3 route or the hardware can't cope.
Hope this helps,
...David |

Does anybody know if there is any software for conversion of tracker or MIDI music to MP3 format whcih could be then burnt onto a CD? (although I suppose I could brun MIDI onto a CD) How do I take the output and make it into MP3 format? i know Justin fletcher has written an MP3 encoder but there appears to be a module i need for it. does anybody also know here I could get this?thanks Andrew |

I thought Justin Fletcher's proggy was just a front-end for encoding MP3s. You can get LAME which is an mp3 encoder from http://www.sbellon.de/ IIRC, and i don't know where you get cmpa (which i think is the one that Justin used) I believe someone released a program a while back (it was in csa.announce) which converted DIgital Symphony files into raw sample data (which you could then encode into MP3s), but I don't have any details. if u've got a pc & a Creative SoundBaster Live! on hand then you should be able to convert it pretty easy, & without any quality loss, as you can record "what you hear", and they also have some decent line in ports on the card too. If you can find a program that converts the midi/symphony into raw data, then you can then easily use !soundcon to put it into wav, then just convert it into mp3 I think the was a "midi emulator" program that badly played midi files, although it can with the option to record them as wavs. |

Andre Timmermans has written a program for converting sound output in WAVE files which could then be converted into MP3 (which you reminded me of Mark). |

thats the card Ive got too - Beautiful card especially with the 4-point surround available with it If you are interested in composing music then the card should include all the software you really need (Cubasis VST), and if you are looking for more sounds just search for "Soundfonts" on the internet. |

What kind of music software is this? Is is sample-based sequencing, MIDI-based? What kind of features does it have over the older tracker format of music creation?Andrew |

Cubase is both sample and midi based, allowing you to create 16 tracks each for midi, & for samples. Once your final piece has been created, then you can just mix it down into .wav, from which you can choose to do whatever you like with it. I pesonally convert it into MP3 format, so that they are easily distributable."What kind of features dos it have over the older tracker format of music creation?" - Everything. Cubasis allows soooo much more & in much better quality. One handy thing are the VST plug-ins, allowing you to put effects on your samples. |

No one should even consider putting MP3s into a risc os game until much faster hardware comes along. Hell, I'll stick my neck on the line and say that I think that CD audio on the game CD is the best way to go - little to no processing power taken up, and of as good a quality (to my ear at least) as anything else, until we get vinyl players attached instead of CDROM drives 2 |

hehe, fair point, CD Audio is an easy way to go, as we have discussed for the development of Overcast 2, the problem though that we have seen is that until the game is finished, you cannot really use cd audio - 1: because i cannot compose the tracks all at once 2: it is difficult to tie the audio tracks on CD to the parts of the game until it is close to finishing. Therefore, we are using MP3s initially, and at least through the development of the game as they are very easy to distribute, and can be messed around with as you like |

It's possible to use MP3's but probably best for menu screens with less activity. I think they are best put on CD though regardless of processor capability. It's been done with Ankh by Artex although I wonder if the shorter pieces of music in Exodus could have been put on a CD?
