R-Comp and RCI - new products for Guildford (and other news)
Dear all,
Firstly a huge thankyou to all who sent their good wishes for Allan
following his heart attack last week. The support of the RISC OS
community has meant a huge amount to him, and he is very grateful
indeed. More details about Allan, the heart attack, and his recovery
can be found at http://www.drobe.co.uk/
After much deliberation, we have decided to go ahead with the
Guildford show, but in a slightly diminished capacity. We ask people
to have patience with us there, but hope you still feel able to empty
your wallets!
The planned DialUp/NetFetch upgrades will not be appearing at this
show - hopefully the Birmingham show next month will be more
practical.
Instead, we will have 3 new products available:
UniScan
UniScan is, as the name implies, the scanning counterpart to our
UniPrint printing software. We expect to have this available at the
show, either as an upgrade to UniPrint (in which case, you get one,
all-encompasing "Uni" product) or standalone. It will allow scanning
in two modes - either to VirtualAcorn on the same machine, or to a
RiscPC/Iyonix/A9 over a network. The software uses WindowsXP's
standardised scanning/imaging architecture (applies to WinME and Win2k
also, but it matured in XP) to allow RISC OS to utilise a wide variety
of scanners. We have tested with a selection including Mustek, Canon,
HP and Epson - if in doubt, ask us for more information. The network
mode is particularly exciting to us, because scanner "sharing" isn't
normally (easily) possible, yet most families/businesses don't want to
own several scanners! UniScan makes sharing the scanner between
Windows machines and RISC OS machines very practical - even for cheap
25ukp scanners! Pricing to be confirmed, but expected 39ukp inc.
RISCube Ultra Duo
Sometimes something a bit special happens, and we get a nice surprise.
The RISCube Ultra Duo was our "nice surprise" this month! Based on
the evolution of the centrino architecture found in our RISCube Ultra,
the Ultra Duo uses the very latest chips, designed with desktop use in
mind, and the results are superb. As many will know, our RISCube
Ultra already gives stunning (and arguably market-leading) real-world
results in favourite programs like Artworks, Impression, Ovation Pro
or Easi/Techwriter.
The RISCube Ultra Duo is nearly TWICE as fast
in RISC OS...... and also in Windows!
And yes, that's in benchmarks in both real applications, and synthetic
tests such as Deskbogo, CPUspeed etc. We believe that this is the
fastest RISC OS-capable system available to date, and up to twice the
speed of anything else currently available. Other features include
floppy drive, 8x USB2 ports, firewire, high definition surround sound,
DVD writer, large high-speed hard drive, and expansion space for an
extra drive, more RAM, add-on card and so on.
RISCube MINI
If the RISCube Ultra Duo is a "big brother" to the RISCube Ultra, then
the RISCube MINI is its dwarven sister (didn't want to say brother
again!) Why dwarven? Well, as Tolkien fans will know, dwarves are
very powerful and capable, yet diminutive in size. And that describes
the RISCube MINI very well. The architecture inside the system is
very similar to the RISCube Ultra (giving similar, superb
performance), and available as either a single or dual CPU-core
design. The RISCube MINI includes built-in DVD/CD writer, a built-in
camera-card-reader and 5x USB2 ports for easy expansion. Plenty of
RAM, a full-size desktop hard drive, and even optional internal
wireless networking (all models include normal networking) nicely
complete the picture. Put simply, it's all the benefits of a RISCube
Ultra, but it'll fit in your briefcase. It'll even run the odd game
or 3D imaging, and drive digital LCD monitors thanks to a capable
graphics chip.
Oh, and under most operation it runs as close to silent as we've
heard! Prices start at 899ukp *including* VAT and delivery.
