Firefox released for RISC OS 5 [Updated]

Posted by Andrew Duffell on 10:28, 2/12/2006 | , , , , , , ,

A port of Firefox 2 for Castle Technology's IYONIX PC has been released by Peter Naulls. This release comes after users contributed the 1000 GBP that Peter had asked for to fund the development.

Peter would like to thank all those who contributed, but he is still after another 4000 GBP to release a further update with integration to RISC OS, and fixing some other issues. This release is targeted for Christmas day if the contributions meet the target.

A port for Advantage Six's A9home computer has not been ruled out subject to financial interest, and Peter is asking people interested in a port for any RISC OS platform to email him.

Update: Rob Kendrick has released a patch that allows the IYONIX Firefox port to run on the A9home by providing emulation for the XScale-specific instructions to a fudged copy of the Firefox executable.

Should producing an A9 Home version of his Firefox port be anymore than a matter of aquiring his patched source, and building it without nobbling it to only run in ARMv5 hardware? Or has The Chox done something even more insane?

It's also "built" with XScale only instructions. ;-)

I pretty much imply similar with the ARMv5 comment. It appears that this is the only reason it won't run on the A9 Home. Of course, we don't know, because The Chox doesn't tell anybody anything, other than "more cash please."

Hehe. I know you were. I was referring to the spelling typo in the error message! :)

I am posting this message from Firefox 2 running on the A9Home. I have made it work. The performance of it is fine, even though I am emulating some of the instructions that Chox has decided to use. See my posting on csa.apps "Firefox 2 working on the A9Home" for details.

Another fine example of the RISC OS community working together?

Well done Rob, that's excellent work! It remains to be seen how Peter takes it though. Hopefully he will support this development.

Yup, works here too. :) It's slow, but not much more so than 1.5 AFAICS, and it gets into more sites. I've had Yahoo webmail working, which is impressive (albeit too slow to be a totally happy experience). Thanks Peter for porting, and to Rob for getting it on to the A9. I hope this paves the way for a non-patched release at some point...
