Having powered up my A5000 for the first time in ages I was dismayed to receive a *supervisor message and opening the casing discovered corrosion on the battery. Would I be right in thinking it is not a good idea to try and leave the power on to charge it? Anyone know where I can source a new battery (Varta 280R)? |

Well I finally got round to wiring in the battery in and it is working (charged and carrying power to next points on m.board) but the supervisoor message is still there, *modules reveals a short list, Del reset helps not at all. Do I have to manually reconfigure all of the command modules? is there a list anywhere? It's nearly a decade since I did anything at all with an Acorn and I seem to have forgotten anything I ever learnt! |

You can get a list of all the 'missing' module with the 'unplug' command.
That said, if power-on-del did nothing, then perhaps the CMOS protect jumper is set. I'll leave it up to you to locate that jumper since I've never owned an A5000, never altered the jumper on any of my machines, and seem to be incapable of pulling the information off google at the moment |

Yup, got list of modules, with ROMMODULES, RMREINITed all of them bar a few obvious irrelevancies, Ctrl+Break, did nowt, power-on-del likewise - and of course all the modules were unplugged again. Don't know about a jumper, never heard of it before. Ta for taking an interest tho'. Looks like it's the skip for th epoor old beast, but I still want to get at some precious Ovation and picture files stored on a SCSI drive. |

For the interest of those with an A5000 with the same problem:
The battery has most likely corroded the connections to the CMOS RAM chip and they will need to be remade, and the corrosion scraped off. This will need to be done with a knife, a soldering iron and some tiny spare pieces of wire and a steady hand.
I had two A5000s that I had to repair this way and I have since modified them to accept normal AA Ni-Cd batteries. |
