Thanks to a dutch good samaritan, I am now the owner of two StrongArm Risc PC. I've made one super risc pc by throwing together the best bits (256 MB ram , 40GB HD, 48Xspeed cdrom, unipod ,RiscOS4.02 working CMOS) and the rest. I have few questions: How can you see which revision of StrongArm you have? (mine has jumpers yay!). If I buy a new HD, what type can I buy best? Does anybody has the long pins on sale to make my rpc 2 slices thick? I have a 32MB EDO SIMM from my A7000, but when I put it in my RPC it only shows up as 8MB, what gives? Does the unipod require extra software to work (I plan a clean OS install).
Is the Vpod worth it? |

If I buy a new HD, what type can I buy best? I'd advise getting a CF card and a CF <-> IDE adapter. That's what I did (1GB Sandisk Extreme III that I had lying around) and the RPC is a million times quieter. Turns out the old HDD made most of the noise - and as a bonus, I swapped out the 800M drive for a 1GB CF, so I actually have more space too. The adapters cost pennies off eBay, and setting up the CF is just the same procedure as for any other new HDD.
Is the Vpod worth it? As the recent discussions on piracy have shown, the concept of "worth it" for old machines like this is a variable and entirely subjective one. Would you get any discernible advantage from it? Is it something you'd quickly get bored of, and go back to doing the equivalent on your PC? Only you can really answer this.

How can you see which revision of StrongArm you have? (mine has jumpers yay!). I think it's printed on the CPU, isn't it?
If I buy a new HD, what type can I buy best? I'm not sure how easy it is to get hold of suitably sized IDE hard discs now. You may find it easier to use a compact flash card + adaptor (although IIRC you also need to be careful to get the right type)
I have a 32MB EDO SIMM from my A7000, but when I put it in my RPC it only shows up as 8MB, what gives? Does the RiscPC support EDO RAM? I'm not sure that it did. But since you've already got 256MB of RAM, I can't see you needing that much more!
Does the unipod require extra software to work (I plan a clean OS install). All the drivers are stored in the unipod flash memory/podule ROM.
Is the Vpod worth it? Remember that you'll need RISC OS 6 if you want to use one. |

Vpod is for graphics.
If the machine's a toy, I'd say no. You can hit 1600x1200 at 256 colors, assuming you have 2 megs of VRAM, and your monitor is tolerant of odd signals. |

Thanks for the reply guys, I'll think I'll go for the compact flash solution. The noise of these hard drives are making me crazy. The really old ones (Connor 800mb and Seagate 4G are OK ,but the newer ones, insane! Sadly both RISC PC's only got one meg of VRAM. Both computers where used for data (one was a server). anybody got any two slice pins lying around for sale? |
