Hi there chaps and ladychaps. Didn't realise people still discussed Acorn related stuff. I've been searching the net for Acorn related things since, well, yesterday when I blew the dust off my knackered old A3010. Bit of a problem perhaps someone has the answer to - my mouse is missing. I hear there is a 25 quid ps2 interface available - will it work with an A3010 that already has a scsi podule? (I assume it runs via Serial, so should be okay).

Also - as I'm flat broke at the moment - does anybody have a link to a maplins style diy alternative?

Oh, and nice to be here - rather chuffed there is still an Acorn scene.

Cheers,

Robin Jubber

Antigrav, Antigrav2, Gloop, artist for Elevator and Swarm, copious terrible PD under the name of RAJ. The games were pretty bloody terrible too come to think of it. Oh, and I've chatted with Peter Irvin - lovely fellow, wrote Exile. I feel this earns me instant Acorn Credit Points

You're looking for a simple, effective, low-cost alternative to the Acorn mouse? Perhaps you should find an old serial port mouse on eBay.

Gloop
I loved that one (if it's the one I'm thinking of - little red blob, could stick to the ceiling?)!

The PS2 adaptor plugs in to the Acorn mouse port. You'll find them on the APDL website.

You can use a serial mouse but it needs to be a 3 button Mouse Systems type. Even then it may need a bit of fettling to get it to work on an Acorn. You'll also need appropriate software. You'll find !PCmouse in the PD library on the APDL website and that works fine on an A3010. Main problem you'll have to run !PCmouse from a floppy disc from the command line each time you switch on if you don't have a hard disc which might be a bit of a pain.

BTW if it's been stored for a few years it's worth taking a look at the CMOS battery. That may well be getting to the stage where it's starting to leak. It's a real PITA to get to on the A3010 (it's under the floppy drive) but if it does leak you'll soon have a very sick computer.

Amen to that. There has been a rash of people digging old machines out of their attics recently, and so many threads on here dealing with boot failures, leaking batteries, corroded traces on the motherboard, etc. The longer it's been in storage, the more extreme the effects of electricity on aged capacitors and batteries might be.

I don't suppose you're in a position to consider the release of sources (for these or anything else) are you? The Raspberry Pi project is looking for games to include!

A DIY PS2 -> Acorn mouse adapter would be a bit tricky, since it needs to contain a microcontroller to convert between the two bus protocols.

Err, no they're not. You are.*

Correction: The RISC OS on Raspberry Pi project is looking for games to include!

(And that links to Theo's post anyway, although it had been previously mentioned.)

[Edit: Others are looking for games too.]

Hi - cheers for the info about the mouse, and about the potentially lethal cmos battery - I'll have a look at that pronto.

Re the games - Antigrav is public domain so do what you like with it. Its also horribly difficult and a bit, well, awful. I was very young when I wrote it. I think Gloop and Antigrav 2 are both owned by The Fourth Dimension who may or may not still exist. If not then by all means - go ahead. And they never paid me, so fluck em. Gloop was included on an arc emulator cd a few years ago so perhaps its pd now too.

Perhaps I should write a new game for the arc. Could do with a break from coding the Psp Vita all day. Writing some ARM code will make a nice change from writng so much AR... oh.

They're still for sale, but are only "Strong ARM and RISC OS 4 compatible".

Well 4th Dimension certainly still exists - I own it. Both Gloop and Antigrav 2 appear on one of our CDs and there's a (small) amount of money waiting for you if you'd care to contact me.

I've paid royalties to all the authors I've been able to trace but unfortunately most of them seem to have vanished.

wow! the mind boggles that people are still buying Archimedes games in 2011. Its really cool to see my shonky old games still have some sort of a life. I really should write another, just for the hell of it.

Apologies for any implied insult David.

I've noticed on ebay there are some USB and PS2 mice adapters for the Amiga ...

As a splendid footnote to this post - turns out the royalties from my ancient old 4D games that APDL now publish are sufficient to exactly pay for APDL to send me a new Archimedes mouse - which is exactly what I was after in the first place!

Time to write a new game for the arc. Any suggestions for a good C compiler for RiscOS?

For pure C, the Norcroft compiler (see www.riscosopen.org ) is hard to beat, but as a more flexible/cross-platform compiler, GCC is a better choice (see http://www.riscos.info/ ) and it is free.

Personally, I use Norcroft because it was the old Acorn compiler, and was very much the best choice when I started with it 15-20 years ago. Ouch, that made me feel old.

Congrats on your new mouse smile

I've bought a few APDL compilations (which I think are great value) and I'll be interested to see how your new game turns out!

Maybe you could stop and keep us posted on the highs and lows of programming a game on RISC OS in 2011 wink
