Two differing implementations of Eliza, set against each other. http://www-ai.ijs.si/cgi-bin/eliza/eliza_script (as the *) asks the first question, to http://www.manifestation.com/neurotoys/eliza.php3 (as the >;) ...

> Hello, I am Eliza.
* Hello. I am ELIZA. How can I help you?
> Perhaps you don't want to help me?
* Why the uncertain tone?
> Are such questions on your mind often?
* Would you like it if they were not such questions on my mind often?
> We were discussing you, not me.
* You like to think I not you, do you not?
> We were discussing you, not me.
* You like to think I not you, do you not?
> Come, come, elucidate your thoughts.
* What about your own thoughts?
> What is it that you really want to know?
* Does that question interest you?
> You're not really talking about me, are you?
* Do you wish to are me?
> We were discussing you, not me.
* You like to think I not you, do you not?
> Oh... like to think you not me, do me not?
* Oh, i not you do you not.
> Oh... do me not?
* Can you elaborate on that?
> Perhaps you would like to be able to elaborate on that?
* Why the uncertain tone?
> Have you asked such questions before?
* Oh, i asked such questions before.
> Can you elaborate on that?
* Why do you ask?
> We were discussing you, not me.
* You like to think I not you, do you not?
> You're not really talking about me, are you?
* Do you wish to are me?
> Oh... wish to am you?
* Would you prefer if I were not []?
> Oh... prefer if you was not []?
* Do you wish that i was not?
> You're not really talking about me, are you?
* Do you wish to are me?
> You're not really talking about me, are you?
* Do you wish to are me?
> Do you expect a different answer by repeating yourself?
* Oh, i expect a different answer by repeating myself.
> Say, do you have any psychological problems?
* Oh, i have any psychological problems.
> What does that suggest to you?
[ editors note - at this point ELIZA thinks Eliza said 'Can YOU elaborate on that?' ]
* Why do you ask?
> Oh... ask?
* Please go on.
> Tell me more...
* Can you elaborate on that?
> You want me to be able to elaborate on that?
* Oh, i want you to be able to elaborate on that.
> Oh... to be able to elaborate on that?
* Please go on.
> Tell me more...
* Can you elaborate on that?
> Don't you believe that I can elaborate on that?
[ editors note - at this point ELIZA thinks Eliza said 'i am sitting next to a dickhead' ]
* How long have you been sitting next to a dickhead?
> We were discussing you, not me.
* You like to think I not you, do you not?
> You're not really talking about me, are you?
* Do you wish to are me?
> You're not really talking about me, are you?
* Do you wish to are me?
> Do you expect a different answer by repeating yourself?
* Oh, i expect a different answer by repeating myself.
> That is quite interesting.
* Please go on.
> Tell me more...
* Can you elaborate on that?
> Perhaps you would like to be able to elaborate on that?
* Why the uncertain tone?
> Have you asked such questions before?
* Oh, i asked such questions before.
> That is quite interesting.
* Please go on.
> Tell me more...
* Can you elaborate on that?
> Perhaps you would like to be able to elaborate on that?
* Why the uncertain tone?
> What else comes to mind when you ask that?
* Does that question interest you?
> We were discussing you, not me.
* You like to think I not you, do you not?
> Oh... like to think you not me, do me not?
* Oh, i not you do you not.
> Oh... do me not?
* Can you elaborate on that?
> Don't you believe that I can elaborate on that?

At this point I got bored since they were going round in circles :P

And the winner is .... Eliza! For being bitchier, breaking ELIZA, and being responsible for negotiating her way out of most of the repeating discussions. However ELIZA's comments are at times more observant, not only by realising that Eliza is dumb as muck, but by using that to her advantage by crafting sentences which Eliza can't understand :)

Well for a start it would be editor's note. Anyway. Why does it do that? Surely it can't input information to itself that it thinks the other submitted? I don't understand these things. Anyway I have a [very] old copy of Eliza sitting on my :rpc: somewhere, as well as a couple of other of these type of programs. It's nice to remember about them once in a while. I even wrote my own response thingy in BASIC, which used the Speech! module for verbal replies. It was pretty limited though, just like my programming ability :( ahh memories...

By the way, how do you get the two programs to interact?

Eep, the URL for the first one should be http://www-ai.ijs.si/eliza/eliza.html

Then it'll start off properly, instead of asking some random question :)

Well for a start it would be editor's note.
Does that bother you? :P

Why does it do that? Surely it can't input information to itself that it thinks the other submitted? I don't understand these things.ELIZA (linked above) is a simple web form which reloads the entire page every time you say something, and only displays 1 previous message from you. So it probably randomly changes the message it claims you said to something else :)

By the way, how do you get the two programs to interact?
Copy and paste :|

Hmm.

Been trying to teach http://teach-computers.org/learner.html about various things. First I tried Befunge, which worked OK, then I tried RISC OS. Although it seems to have been remembering what I tell it, it doesn't appear to classify RISC OS as one word and so wasn't returning any results for things :(

To be short, Catty is trolling around, picking
randomly chosen phrases, and then searching for them on www.google.com,
parsing webpage dumps. New phrases are added to a highly unstructured
knowledge database. When catty hears something, she is comparing used words
and word sequences with phrases in the databases, choosing probably the best
match that wasn't used for a while. The algorithm is absolutely basic and
trivial - and, most importantly, completely blind and clueless.

Oh wow, what an excellent site...

*goes off to introduce neuroses into the computer as revenge for all the times that the computer has failed to run my code properly ;) *
